10 Steps For Acquiring Truck Driving Licence

A heavy vehicle licence is a key to the world of truck driving. However, acquiring a heavy vehicle licence can take more than two years. Whether you currently hold a learner’s permit or a provisional licence, there are different guidelines and rules for driving that needs to be followed. We will guide you through the different stages that will give you a better idea on how to acquire your truck driving licence.
  1. Learner’s permit
The first step is to pass a basic learner's online test to acquire your learner’s permit. To be eligible, you should be above 16 years of age.
  1. Learn to drive
Once you have the permit, you can start taking driving lessons from an authorized instructor. You need to record a minimum of 50 hours of supervised driving, which includes 5 hours of driving in the night.
  1. Hazard perception test
After 6 months, you will need to go through the hazard perception test. This test will assess your driving decisions in different driving conditions.
  1. Provisional Licence
After passing a practical driving assessment test, you can acquire a provisional licence. For a Provisional Licence, you should be 17 years old and should have completed 50 hours of supervised driving.
  1. Car Licence (C class)
At 18 years of age, you can apply for a C class licence. Only after getting a car licence can you think of acquiring a heavy vehicle licence.
  1. Medium Rigid or Light Rigid class licence

This licence will open up the world of truck driving. Once you acquire this licence you can search for commercial truck driver jobs in Melbourne. To be eligible for MR or LR class licence, one should hold:
  • A car licence for a minimum of a year
  • Be over 18 years old
  • Pass a driving test
  1. LR licence allows you to drive:
  • A vehicle with Gross Vehicle Mass (GVM) more than 4.5 tonnes but not more than 8 tonnes; for example, trucks, more than 13 seater buses, vans, etc.
  • A bus with GVM less than 8 tonnes
  1. MR licence allows you to drive:
  • A vehicle with two axles and a GVM of more than 8 tonnes and large buses
  • An SPV (special purpose vehicle) with 2 axles
  1. Heavy Combination or Heavy Rigid (HC or HR class) licence
For an HR licence, you should:
  • Have a car licence for a minimum of two years
  • Or, hold an MR or LR class for minimum one year
  • Be over 18 years of age

  1. Multi Combination (MC class) Licence
For an MC licence, you should:
  • Hold an HC or HR licence for a year
  • Be over 20 years old
To acquire an MC licence, you must pass the CBT course in a B-double vehicle. With this licence, you will be permitted to drive any heavy vehicle including B-doubles and road trains.
